RE: “Larry Lessig’s equation was Code = Law. ” This formulation is not even false. It commits the logical fallacy of equivocation by confusing two different kinds of things with the same appearance. Computer code is prescriptive in that it tells a machine what it MUST do. In contrast, legal code in a free society only tells an individual what they MUST NOT do, the actions to be avoided in order to keep the balancing action of the justice system from being put into motion against them. Subsuming computer code and legal code under the same concept implicitly endorses fascism, which entails the use of the laws to dictate the actions of individuals. Lastly, there is a conceptual error in use the “=” in place of “is” in “Code = Law”. Mathematical equivalence is not interchangeable with logical identity. This type of error blanks out the qualitative aspects of entities by using a quantitative linking term.

Well-known Goth Pop - Lacuna Coil

Many people would call Lacuna Coil a definitive goth band, but this particular song sounds very much like mainstream pop to me.

The "Goth" mood was created by the fans who perceived the artists more than by the artists

It is striking how many artists were perceived as gloomy, morbid, and "goth" by the fans, but rejected that label.

Pop art is not a guru-teaching.  The artist is not a guru, and the fan is not a chela.  The people who come to a nightclub are making a very subtle, very powerless contribution.

The artist has a lot of authority, control, prestige.  People pay attention to the artist;  people try to ignore the fans.

Rather than making the fan unimportant, this makes the fans supremely important.  It is like the "yin" of Taoist philosophy;  it exerts no power and somehow it rules all things.

The Gothic-Punk gets the Goth from David Bowie and the Punk from Ian Curtis

There is no good answer to the question "What is Gothic Punk?"

Bowie's ceremonial-magickal song "Station to Station" suggests that he's aspiring to something Romantic, Byronic, other-worldly.  Bowie links up to the original literary Goths of England, and there is a hint of the death-obsession and morbidity there.  Gothic horror fiction always had a lot of morbid themes.

Joy Division, on the other hand, embodied Ian Curtis' suicidal tendencies, at least until Curtis killed himself.

In the 1980s, there was a lot of gothic music that was on the radio, such as Siouxsie and the Banshees.  Siouxsie was described as a "gothic pixie," and to my ears, a lot of her songs are like Doors songs.

The lyrics are just as morbid as any Doors song, but Siouxsie is a tremendously feminine voice, and so she gets a very different effect than Jim Morrison could ever have produced when she sings:

By contrast, Ministry's song about wearing black clothing comes across as comparatively mainstream - the music is very much 1980s techno, the vocals are complaining about being trapped in mundane reality.  It is as though Siouxsie has escaped into some kind of shamanic astral plane, and Jourgensen is bitter about being left behind with the lame normal mundanes who jeer at his black clothing:
